How Limousines Are Made

Most people are aware of limousines. They are associated with entertainers, politicians, and wealthy business people because of their comfort, privacy, and style. When you see a limousine approaching, you know there is someone important inside. But have you ever looked at a beautiful limousine driving down the road and asked yourself, "How in the world did they make that thing?" Read on to find out how!

Many Fields

As an amalgamation of various parts, pieces, and purposes, limousines have an interesting set of requirements for construction. Professionals versed in the fields of mechanics, engineering, fabrication, machinery, electronics, welding, and interior design must put in their expertise to make it happen. They must work together to contend with issues like the confined working space, the weight of the parts, and the high level of precision required by the end client who will use the limo.

The Steps

First, a car must be used as a base for the body of the future limousine. A variety of cars may be chosen. Popular choices include luxury makes such as Lincoln, Cadillac, or Escalade. Even more exotic vehicles such as a Hummer, Bentley, or Rolls Royce Phantom can add further unique flair. Sports cars such as Corvettes and Porsches have even been used. This choice will serve to define the look, capacity, and stylistic impact of the final vehicle.

A stock vehicle is purchased from the dealer and then stripped down to the frame of the car. It is carefully cut in half, so that it may then be "stretched." The metal chassis is extended by welding more steel pieces between the existing halves. This must be done with expert precision to create a safe, sturdy body. Additional outer panels are then added on to enclose the car.

Luxury interior upgrades are then added, including accoutrements such as fancy lighting, integrated refrigerator, deluxe stereo system and televisions, moving lasers or a wet bar. A separation between passengers and the driver is often installed. Depending on the size of the car, a working Jacuzzi could even be included! The windows are typically tinted to preserve a sense of seclusion. Finally, a high-quality paint job ties together the whole ensemble.

Now that the mystery and inner workings of the elusive limousine have been unwrapped for you, don't forget that they make a great way to get around in style. Rides to and from the airport, to a nightlife destination, or for a special occasion like prom, are all great times to rent a limousine.
